چکیده

We have carried out additional spectroscopic observations in the field of cluster Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76. Combined with the spectroscopy presented in Postman, Lubin & Oke (2001, AJ, 122, 1125), we now have spectroscopically confirmed 47 cluster members. With this significant number of redshifts, we measure accurately the cluster velocity dispersion to be 1016 −93 km s −1. The distribution of velocity offsets is consistent with a Gaussian, indicating no substantial velocity substructure. As previously noted for other optically-selected clusters at redshifts of z & 0.5, a comparison between the X-ray luminosity (Lx) and the velocity dispersion (σ) of Cl 1324+3011 implies that this cluster is underluminous in X-rays by a factor of ∼ 3−40 when compared to the Lx−σ relation for local and moderate-redshift clusters. We also examine the morphologies of those cluster members which have available high-angular-resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). There are 22 spectroscopically-confirmed cluster members within the HST field-of-view. Twelve of these are visually classified as early-type (elliptical or S0) galaxies, implying an early-type fraction of 0.55 −0.14 in this cluster. Space Telescope Science Institute is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

High - Redshift , Optically - Selected Clusters : XMM - Newton Results for Cl 1324 + 3011 at z = 0 . 76 and Cl 1604 + 4304 at z = 0 . 90

We present the first detailed X-ray observations of optically-selected clusters at high redshift. Two clusters, Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76 and Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90, were observed with XMM-Newton. The optical center of each cluster is coincident with an extended X-ray source whose emission is detected out to a radius of ∼ 0.5 h 70 Mpc. The emission from each cluster appears reasonably circular...

A Study of Nine High - Redshift Clusters of Galaxies : IV . Photometry and Spectra of Clusters 1324 + 3011 and 1604 + 4321 Marc Postman

New photometric and spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the directions of three distant clusters are presented as part of our on-going high-redshift cluster survey. The clusters are CL1324+3011 at z = 0.76, CL1604+4304 at z = 0.90, and CL1604+4321 at z = 0.92. We have spectroscopically confirmed cluster membership for 20 to 40 galaxies in each system and have also obtained spectra for ove...

We describe Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 10 of the 20 ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) fields. Each ∼40 square arcminute field was imaged in the F814W filter with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Camera. Based on these data, we present visual morphological classifications for the ∼920 sources per field that are brighter than I auto = 23 mag. We use these classifications ...

The fundamental plane of EDisCS galaxies

We study the evolution of spectral early-type galaxies in clusters, groups, and the field up to redshift 0.9 using the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) dataset. We measure structural parameters (circularized half-luminosity radii Re, surface brightness Ie, and velocity dispersions σ) for 154 cluster and 68 field galaxies. On average, we achieve precisions of 10% in Re, 0.1 dex in log Ie, and...

Evolution of the early-type galaxy fraction in clusters since z = 0.8

We study the morphological content of a large sample of high-redshift clusters to determine its dependence on cluster mass and redshift. Quantitative morphologies are based on PSF-convolved, 2D bulge+disk decompositions of cluster and field galaxies on deep Very Large Telescope FORS2 images of eighteen, optically-selected galaxy clusters at 0.45 < z < 0.80 observed as part of the ESO Distant Cl...
